Western Canada Linear Algebra Meeting (WCLAM)
Speakers
Details
The 2008 Western Canada Linear Algebra Meeting (WCLAM) will be held at the University of Manitoba in rooms E2 330 and E2 350 of the Engineering Building on May 30-31, 2008. This is the 8th in a series of meetings that have been held since 1993; the previous meetings were held in Regina, Lethbridge, Kananaskis, Victoria, Winnipeg, Regina, and Victoria. WCLAM primarily provides an opportunity for mathematicians and other researchers in western Canada working in linear algebra and related fields to meet, present accounts of their research, and to have informal discussions. While the meeting has a regional base, it also attracts researchers from outside the geographical area, and everyone is welcome to attend and to give presentations.
In addition to the invited talks, participants are encouraged to give a 25 minute presentation. Please submit the title and abstract for your talk by April 15, 2008. There will also be an "open problem" session, in which all attendees are encouraged to participate.
The participation fee is $20 (Canadian), to be collected at the meeting. This fee is waived for the invited speakers, students and postdoctoral fellows. If you are giving a talk, or if you are a student or postdoctoral fellow applying for travel funds, please complete the registration form by April 15, 2008. Other attendees are requested to complete and submit the registration form by May 10, 2008.
Note that the Prairie Discrete Mathematics Meeting (V) is being held at the University of Manitoba on May 28-29, 2008 in the same rooms as WCLAM.

Student Participation
WCLAM has a strong tradition of student participation. Graduate students and PostDocs, in particular, are encouraged to speak.
This year we are also featuring a poster session, in which all students or postdocs in attendance are welcome to participate. The style of the session is passive: Posters will remain up in the refreshment area throughout the meetings for casual browsing, and presenters are to be available at their poster for questions at designated times between regular sessions, but there will not be a specific block of time uniquely allotted for "poster presentations". This is a particularly good venue for grad students not yet ready to speak on their work, undergraduate students reporting on summer research projects, and anyone wishing to make a presentation that does not fit into the regular schedule, either because of the nature of the material or because the main session is full.
More information on poster sessions can be found here:
http://server.maths.umanitoba.ca/~craigen/WCLAM08/Posters101.html
Partial travel support will be available for any student or PostDoc applicants who make a presentation, either in the main session or by way of a poster. The level of support for those who speak may be more than that for those presenting posters. Students and their supervisors are also encouraged to take advantage of travel funds available through their home departments and/or faculties.
Financial Support
Some travel support is available for a limited number of students and postdoctoral fellows on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please apply for this by April 15, 2008 on the conference registration form.
The participation fee is $20 (Canadian), to be collected at the meeting. This fee is waived for the invited speakers, students and postdoctoral fellows.
