Quantum System Identification: Hamiltonian tomography and decoherence estimation
from noisy time series data

Abstract:
I will discuss ways to characterize the dynamics of a quantum
system given a restricted set of initial states that can be prepared and a very
limited set of available measurements. I will first discuss strategies for
Hamiltonian identification using Bayesian parameter estimation from noisy time
series data, level structure identification and finally Hamiltonian
reconstruction. I will then consider how to generalize this approach to open
systems in special cases, e.g., to estimate dephasing rates, and possible
alternatives.
