What do designing a hybrid vehicle engine, a microscopic description of the fission process, a groundwater remediation plan, a fast code on a modern supercomputer, and an experimental X-ray beam have in common?
All are examples of challenging simulation-based optimization problems. The difference between success and failure in solving these optimization problems often depends on how the problems are modeled. In this talk, we describe our work exploiting structure in such problems to obtain solutions in a minimal number of numerical simulations
