Women in Mathematics of Data Science Workshop

The Women in Mathematics of Data Science Workshop is a 10-day research-focused workshop, and will take place on August 4-14, 2026 at the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia. This workshop will gather several female leaders in the field of Mathematics of Data Science as well as a group of junior participants. The participants will be split into groups and work on research projects proposed by the group leaders together. Participants will spend most of the time working on their research problem with 1 to 2 hours per day devoted to project presentations and short talks. During the workshop, participants will have many hours of focused, uninterrupted and in-person collaboration. Our hope is that these meetings will continue beyond the workshop and ultimately lead to published papers on the proposed topics of research.

Workshop Timeline
February: Applications open.
March 29: Applications should be submitted by this date to ensure full consideration.
April 10: Decisions will be announced.
April 10: Group leaders will share their proposed projects with accepted participants.
April 20: The participants will rank the projects they are most excited about.
April 30: Using these rankings, we will form the working groups.
May - July: Initial group meetings and informal collaboration will take place helping everyone get to know their projects and teammates in advance.
August 4 - August 14: We will come together for in-person collaboration at the University of British Columbia in the beautiful city of Vancouver, Canada. We are very much looking forward to this focused and inspiring time together!
Additional Information
Participation in this workshop is open to everyone, regardless of gender or career stage! Women and other underrepresented groups in mathematics are especially encouraged to apply. We expect to be able to cover all accommodation and provide partial financial support towards food and flights for all participants. To ensure full consideration, please submit your application by March 29, 2026.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to briefly describe your research interests and motivation for participating in the workshop, submit your most recent CV, and provide an estimate of the cost of your flight to Vancouver.
Student applicants will additionally be asked to arrange for a letter of reference, preferably from their advisor, to be submitted on their behalf.
