Mathematical and Statistical Challenges for Sustainability
In November 2010, PIMS cosponsored a meeting on ‘Mathematical and Statistical Challenges for Sustainability’. Recently a report from this meeting was published by the American Math Society. This report covers topics such as human well-being and the natural environment, measuring and monitoring progress toward sustainability and mathematical challenges in energy sustainability. It also includes the group white papers which came from the meeting. Each chapter concludes with the mathematical challenges which emerged from the group discussions and includes recommendations made by the meeting participants.
"Sustainability is one of the key challenges facing humanity in the 21st Century. In this report a group of leading researchers in the mathematical sciences came together to outline how tools from disciplines such as mathematics and statistics must play an essential role in the emerging science of sustainability.
This will require re-examining how we train students and postdocs, as this subject has unique characteristics very different from those of traditional fields.
In the near future PIMS will play a leadership role in bringing together teams of researchers to address the challenges and implement the recommendations in the report. PIMS looks forward to working on this with the community of mathematical scientists in Canada and from around the world." commented PIMS Director Alejandro Adem.
