Thirty Years of Building Canada's Mathematical Future

How a distributed institute became one of Canada's most influential mathematical research networks.
 

Thirty years ago, mathematicians across Western Canada set out to address a broad challenge facing the mathematical sciences: how to better connect researchers across a vast geography, attract talent, and build world-class research communities.

That vision became the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS).

Founded in 1996 as a consortium of five universities — the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Victoria — PIMS created a new kind of research institute: not a single building, but a distributed network designed to connect people, ideas, and institutions.

Today, PIMS is a network of ten member universities spanning British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Washington State. Each university hosts a dedicated PIMS site office, led by a Site Director who works closely with local researchers while contributing to the institute's network-wide scientific programs and strategic priorities. Together, these sites form a collaborative research community that is greater than the sum of its parts.


This distributed model enables PIMS to combine centralized coordination with local expertise. 
Through Collaborative Research Groups, PIMS Research Networks (PRNs), thematic programs, workshops, and seminars, researchers collaborate across institutions, throughout the PIMS network and through a growing set of international partnerships. 

Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows benefit from shared courses, travel opportunities, and professional networks that span the entire PIMS community and beyond. 

At the same time, PIMS supports activities at each site that reflect regional strengths and partnerships, extending PIMS' impact into local communities, schools, industry, and government.
 

As PIMS celebrates its 30th anniversary, it is looking ahead to the next chapter. Upcoming thematic years on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, followed by the Mathematics of Quantum Science and Technology, demonstrate how the institute's distributed model continues to bring together expertise from across its network to address emerging scientific and technological challenges.

Thirty years after its founding, PIMS continues to fulfill the collaborative vision on which it was built. By connecting the expertise of its member universities, PIMS demonstrates how a distributed research network can advance mathematical discovery, develop future generations of mathematical scientists, and strengthen Canada's capacity for innovation—across the country and around the world.
