Call for Network-wide Graduate Courses: 2022-2023 Graduate Courses

The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences would like to hear from instructors willing to share their courses with participants at other PIMS universities.

We invite proposals for graduate courses in the mathematical sciences to take place in either term of the 2022-2023 academic year. These courses will be designated as PIMS Network-wide graduate courses and will be advertised and promoted throughout the PIMS network.

Instructors participating in this program will benefit by reaching a larger potential audience, and from interactions with fellow instructors and PIMS staff on how to best develop network-wide offerings. Students will have the opportunity to learn topics that may not be available at their university and have access to experts in advanced mathematical subjects. It is expected that students from PIMS member universities in Canada will be able to register for the courses through the Western Deans Agreement. In particular, we hope to amplify the variety of expertise in the mathematical sciences and promote courses beyond core graduate offerings. Proposals should include details of plans for course dissemination (e.g. live-streaming, recording, or both, etc.).

If you are interested in participating as an instructor, please complete the instructor application form, by April 15, 2022. Proposals will be assessed by the PIMS Digital Collaboration Committee and applicants will be notified of the status of their course by April 30, 2022.

The following factors will be considered in evaluating proposed courses:

• Level of course (PIMS aims to support advanced and/or novel courses not routinely taught across the network);
• Level of interest among students in the course material;
• Breadth of topics for PIMS-supported courses;
• Diversity of sites offering PIMS-supported courses;
• Plans for ensuring that the courses are fully accessible to remote students;
• Letter of agreement from department chair;

Additional considerations may include:

• "Value-added features" such as guest lectures;
• Recording and posting of lectures;
• Proposed use/need/availability of any requested funds/resources;
• The term in which the course is to be offered;
• Diversity of instructors offering network-wide graduate courses.
