A Taste of Pi is Back!
We are happy to continue our series “A Taste of Pi”. The twentieth
part of this successful series of talks and activities for high school
students will be offered this spring by the SFU Department of Mathematics, and IRMACS – Interdisciplinary Research in the Mathematics and Computational Science with support by the SFU Faculty of Science and PIMS - the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences.
The program consists of monthly Saturday morning meetings at SFU, from
9:00 to 12:30, during which students will have an opportunity to attend
presentations given by distinguished faculty members about their
research, about new and exciting developments in the mathematical
sciences, and about contemporary applications of mathematics. During the
presentations, students will be working on exciting problems and
activities related to the concepts they have just learned. The session
will end with a talk with the topic from another scientific discipline.
“A Taste of Pi” is designed to provide students in grades 10 and 11, who
have demonstrated a talent and a strong interest for mathematics, with
enrichment activities in a fun and rewarding environment.
Participation in the program is by invitation only.
See the upcoming sessions for invited speakers and their talks.
If you wish to recommend a student who may benefit from the program, please complete the posted form and return by fax no later than Friday, February 28, 2014.
Since space is limited, it may not be possible to invite all of those
students who are nominated. The participants will be selected on Monday,
March 3, from those nominated, and the successful applicants will be
informed through their teachers.
Cost of the three sessions: $15.00 (includes refreshments).
