New PIMS Site Director at University of Alberta Appointed
Charles Doran is the new PIMS site director for the University of Alberta, replacing Gerald Cliff who served in this capacity for the past five years.
Professor Doran began his career with a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1999, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Penn State and Columbia University. In 2008 he moved from a faculty post at the University of Washington to the University of Alberta, where he is now an associate professor in the department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences.
Professor Doran's thesis was the first to be written in the Harvard mathematics department on "mirror symmetry," a subtle duality relating pairs of Calabi-Yau spaces. In the years since, Professor Doran has established himself as one of a select group of top experts on the mathematics and physics of Calabi-Yau spaces. Most recently, his work has focused on the interplay between algebraic cycles and string dualities.
