Site director Gunther Uhlmann awarded prestigious SIAM prize

Congratulations again to PIMS site director Gunther Uhlmann!

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has announced that Prof. Uhlmann has been awarded the 2011 Ralph E. Kleinman Prize. This is the third major honor awarded to the PIMS site director at the University of Washington since the beginning of this year.

Prof. Uhlmann commented on his award today, “I am delighted to be awarded the Ralph E. Kleinman prize by SIAM and to join such a distinguished list of previous recipients. This prize is very special to me since it is awarded for research that bridges the gap between mathematics and applications. The prize is not just mine, I share it with numerous collaborators, graduate students and postdocs who have enriched my life both personally and professionally. I have been so fortunate to have had the unwavering love and support of my family and this prize also belongs to them.”

‘The Ralph E. Kleinman prize is awarded to one individual for outstanding research, or other contributions, that bridge the gap between mathematics and applications. Work that uses high-level mathematics and/or invents new mathematical tools to solve applied problems from engineering, science, and technology is particularly appropriate. The value of the work will be measured by the quality of the mathematics and its impact on the application…’ (Taken from the SIAM website www.siam.org)

The Prize will be awarded during the ICIAM meetings in Vancouver in July at a CAIMS/MITACS/SIAM Awards Luncheon.
