Deputy Director of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences

Applications are invited for the position of Deputy Director of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), with a starting date of July 1, 2019. PIMS is a consortium of mathematical scientists at Simon Fraser University, the University of Alberta, the University of British Columbia, the University of Calgary, the University of Lethbridge, the University of Regina, the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Victoria, the University of Manitoba and the University of Washington. PIMS is supported by these universities, the federal government of Canada through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the provincial governments of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. The successful candidate will be a tenured mathematical scientist (Associate or Full Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or other department), at one of the PIMS member universities and will be expected to serve a five-year term as Deputy Director of PIMS, with the possibility of renewal. Applicants must have an outstanding record of accomplishment in the mathematical sciences (mathematics, statistics, computer science, or other mathematical sciences) and should have expertise and skills that are compatible with the scientific and educational mandate of PIMS, as described in http://www.pims.math.ca/pims-glance

The applicant should demonstrate strong evidence of leadership and excellent communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

The Deputy Director of PIMS will work, in collaboration with the PIMS Director, the PIMS Central Team, and others across the PIMS network, to advance the mathematical sciences. In particular, the Deputy Director’s portfolio includes: the development and implementation of scientific policies; the adjudication process for educational, industrial and scientific programs; the organization of institute activities; the supervision of staff; and the preparation of grant proposals. The Deputy Director will have considerable autonomy and will serve ex-officio as a member of the PIMS Scientific Review Panel and the PIMS Board of Directors. The Deputy Director will continue to serve as a Professor at a PIMS member university. PIMS will provide funds to assist with a reduction in teaching load and a salary top-up.
