Callysto Canada: Providing Funding for Coding & Computational Thinking Activities in Classrooms Across Canada
The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences in partnership with Cybera, is pleased to announce that Callysto Canada has received new funding from the federal government’s CanCode program.
Callysto is a curriculum-based learning and skills development platform that was developed to help students strengthen their digital capabilities. It gives grades 5-12 students access to a university-level learning program capable of performing big data processing, highly graphic and interactive visualizations, all levels of coding, digital math equations, remote collaboration and a multitude of other innovative functions – all from their web browser.
The funding will be used for:
Classroom activities
If you teach Grades 5-12 students in Canada, Callysto wants to help fund your classroom activities related to computational thinking and coding. For example, you could submit a proposal to cover the cost of developing curriculum resources that feature Jupyter Notebooks or for hosting a coding workshop or student hackathon (e.g. to cover the cost of the venue, catering, or support staff).
The application process is quick and easy and can be submitted online
The Phase 1 submission deadline is November 1, 2019, for activities that will occur between October 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020.
Teacher Training
So far, over 750 Canadian teachers have been trained on Callysto. The goal is to expand that number by a further 2000 teachers across the country over the next two years. Teachers will be provided with intensive training sessions through face-to-face workshops and self-directed online modules. They will also be offered supplementary training and have access to learning modules and lesson plans that can be used in their classrooms.
Applicants are also welcome to send proposal drafts to the Callysto team for feedback, well in advance of the deadline, at proposals@callysto.ca.
