Workshop on the Creation of a PIMS Environmetrics Research & Training Centre
Speakers
Details
Many statistics researchers in the Pacific North-West affiliated with PIMS universities work in the area of environmetrics: climate change and its impacts, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, etc. The aim of this workshop is to discuss the idea of forming an Environmetrics Research and Training Centre, building on research strengths at UBC, UBC-O, SFU, UW, UVic, UNBC and the many agencies in the field of environmetrics, such as Environment Canada, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Pacific Forestry Centre, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Such a multi-university centre would help foster research and training developments across the Pacific North-West. In particular, PIMS has expressed interest in supporting the development of a graduate training program in environmetrics, which would utilize the various courses at universities in the region and build upon our current graduate programs. This workshop explores the ideas of forming such a centre, the creation of a multi-university environmetrics certificate, and fostering research linkages in areas of environmetrics in the region. The workshop will consist of an overview of main areas of environmetrics expertise, as well as open discussion periods and shorter talks which would allow researchers present to give an overview of their expertise and current research initiatives. We plan to devote much time at the meeting to a discussion of the challenges and opportunities in the creation of a multi-university environmetrics certificate, to gauge the interest in this development, and to plan its creation.
This is an event organized by the Collaborative Research Group in Environmetrics.
