PIMS - SFU Discrete Math Seminar: Nancy Ann Neudauer
Topic
Speakers
Details
What have I learned about building mathematical communities over the last twenty years, initially in North America and more recently in Africa and South America? What does “belonging” mean to those who are already part of a mathematical community, and how can we provide the sort of welcome we once received (or would have liked to receive)? What constructive actions can we take to help mathematics students transition to a research-based academic career, and how might these differ when the students are located in developing countries without access to established infrastructure?
Dr. Neudauer will discuss these and other questions in a special session of the SFU Discrete Mathematics Seminar, intended for students and faculty at all career stages. She will share stories and insights gained from decades of service to the mathematical community as a researcher, teacher, mentor, and organizer.
Additional Information
Online via Zoom. Please contact the organizer for the link.
A note from the organizers:
Following the online talk, there will be a virtual social lunch for extended discussion. The lunch session will provide a chance for in-depth discussion. As a bonus, we will directly cover the cost of lunch for as many graduate student and postdoc participants from SFU Department of Mathematics as funding allows (please see the bottom of the email for more details). Please note that the ultimate goal of the lunch offers is to create a comfortable atmosphere for socialization and networking. Of course, everyone is welcome to bring their lunch and join us, regardless whether funding is offered!
