Stable seismic data recovery
March 2, 2007
University of British Columbia
In this paper, directional frames, known as curvelets, are used to recover seismic data and images from noisy and incomplete data. Sparsity and invariance properties of curvelets are exploited toformulate the recovery by a $\ell_1$-norm promoting...

Smooth Surfaces and Sharp Junctions
February 16, 2007
Because of their ability to form blends, respond to contact and produce both organic shapes as well as man made objects, implicit surfaces have the potential for uses other than the traditional clouds and water droplets. Models can be built with...
Scientific, Distinguished Lecture
Descriptive Complexity
February 8, 2007
Neil Immerman is one of the key developers of 'descriptive complexity', which he is currently applying to research in model checking, database theory, and computational complexity theory. Immerman is the winner, jointly with Róbert Szelepcsényi, of...

Strong normality and modular normality
February 2, 2007
The notion of normality was intended to capture random behaviour in the digits of numbers, but some clearly patterned numbers pass the normality test; we propose a stronger test of normality that is passed by almost all numbers but failed by...

Sequences and Codes
July 17–22, 2006
University of British Columbia
The conference will explore new research directions within the fields of sequence design and algebraic error-correcting codes, including radar applications of sequence design, algebraic constructions of space-time codes, and pseudocodewords. We aim...

UBC Math Department Colloquium: Segismundo Izquierdo
March 1, 2024
University of British Columbia
A game represents an interaction in which a group of players make individual choices and receive individual payoffs that depend on the aggregate set of choices. We consider indefinitely repeated games with endogenous separation (meaning that players...

UBC Math Bio Seminar: Belinda Akpa
March 20, 2024
University of British Columbia
At a time when many are wrangling with biological ‘big data’, there remain important problems that are fundamentally data limited – often physiological questions for which there is little quantitative data, and further data collection may be hampered...

UBC Math Department Seminar: Robert Weismantel
March 6, 2024
University of British Columbia
A classical result of Papadimitriou from 1982 states that integer optimization problems in standard form can be solved in running time $\max{\|b\|_\infty, \Delta}^{O(m^2)}$ where $m$ denotes the number of equations of the given system, $\Delta$ is...

Directions

The PIMS offices are located on the 4th floor of the Earth Sciences Building (2207 Main Mall). If using the elevator, our offices will be directly across when you get to the 4th floor. If using the main staircase, the offices will be to your right once you reach the 4th floor.

Airport to PIMS UBC by Bus

From Vancouver Airport (YVR), take the Canada Line Skytrain to Broadway City Hall Station. Get off the platform and walk up to street level. Cross the street and you should see the #99Bline UBC stop outside the Lululemon store. You can take this bus all the way out to UBC. Detailed route information is available through translink's route planner or via google maps. See translink's fare page for up to date prices.

Airport to PIMS UBC by car

To drive from Vancouver Airport (YVR) to UBC, follow signs for Vancouver City Center when leaving the airport. After crossing the Arthur Laing bridge, follow 70th avenue/Marine Drive all the way out to UBC's Point Grey campus. The PIMS offices are in the Earth Science Building on Main Mall which doesn't permit vehicular traffic. The nearest parking lot (or drop off point for Taxis) is on West Mall near the West Parkade at the intersection of West Mall and Bio. Sciences Road (see this map).

Downtown Vancouver to PIMS UBC by car

When leaving Downtown Vancouver, follow signs for UBC (see this map).
