We study the moduli space of certain heterotic string theories defined via complex non--Kahler 3-folds with a holomorphic vector bundle that has a connection that is Hermitian Yang-Mills. A consideration of symmetries naturally leads to fibering the...

The problem of finding minimizers of functions on graphs arises naturally in many different domains, for example, exponential random graphs and extremal combinatorics. In Euclidean setting, there are two widely used approaches for minimizing a given...

We introduce a combinatorial object corresponding to a graph G, called a special rim hook G-tabloid. We construct sign-reversing maps on these special rim hook G-tabloids to prove that a family of claw-free graphs called generalized nets are Schur...

This talk requires no prior knowledge and will be a gentle introduction to colouring graphs. It will be suitable for a broad audience including undergraduates. We will start with some historical tales, including the four colour map problem and the...

Partitions arise in linear algebra as Smith normal forms of finite DVR-modules. This viewpoint has given rise to several important objects in symmetric function theory; they are indexed by partitions. What if we replace the DVR by other rings? The...

I will report on a simple model for collective self-organization in colonies of myxobacteria. Mechanisms include only running, to the left or to the right at fixed speed, and tumbling, with a rate depending on head-on collisions. We show that...

The questions of how healthy colonic crypts maintain their size under the rapid cell turnover in intestinal epithelium, and how homeostasis is disrupted by driver mutations, are central to understanding colorectal tumorigenesis. We propose a three...

We give conditions on a real-valued function F on ℤd, for d>2, which ensure that the solution G to the convolution equation (F∗G)(x)=δ0,x has Gaussian decay |x|−(d−2) for large |x|. Precursors of our results were obtained by Hara in the 2000s, using...

The c2 invariant is an arithmetic graph invariant related to quantum field theory. It is defined in terms of a point count of the Kirchhoff polynomial of a graph and I will present a combinatorial technique for computing the c2 invariant by counting...

Arithmetic Statistics is an emerging subbranch of Number Theory where we count arithmetic objects when bounded by some quantitative invariant, like height. One example is counting polynomials with integer coefficients having a fixed Galois group...

Directions

The PIMS offices are located on the 4th floor of the Earth Sciences Building (2207 Main Mall). If using the elevator, our offices will be directly across when you get to the 4th floor. If using the main staircase, the offices will be to your right once you reach the 4th floor.

Airport to PIMS UBC by Bus

From Vancouver Airport (YVR), take the Canada Line Skytrain to Broadway City Hall Station. Get off the platform and walk up to street level. Cross the street and you should see the #99Bline UBC stop outside the Lululemon store. You can take this bus all the way out to UBC. Detailed route information is available through translink's route planner or via google maps. See translink's fare page for up to date prices.

Airport to PIMS UBC by car

To drive from Vancouver Airport (YVR) to UBC, follow signs for Vancouver City Center when leaving the airport. After crossing the Arthur Laing bridge, follow 70th avenue/Marine Drive all the way out to UBC's Point Grey campus. The PIMS offices are in the Earth Science Building on Main Mall which doesn't permit vehicular traffic. The nearest parking lot (or drop off point for Taxis) is on West Mall near the West Parkade at the intersection of West Mall and Bio. Sciences Road (see this map).

Downtown Vancouver to PIMS UBC by car

When leaving Downtown Vancouver, follow signs for UBC (see this map).

Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to PIMS UBC by car

Follow directions for Vancouver airport until you reach the City of Vancouver, then follow the directions above for travelling from the airport.

US Border to PIMS UBC by car

Follow directions for Vancouver until you reach the City of Vancouver, then follow the directions above for travelling to PIMS from the airport. Please make sure you have the correct travel documents and follow instructions

Travelling between UBC and SFU by bus

There are many public transit options for travel between UBC and SFU but please note the universities are at opposite ends of Vancouver (SFU is actually in Burnaby) and travel can take an hour or more. Visit Translink for more travel options.
