This is joint work with Tetsuya Ito. Fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC), defined by Honda-Kazez-Matic, is an invariant of mapping classes. In this talk we study FDTC by using open book foliation method, then obtain results in topology, geometry...

The theory of reductive groups has many applications in number theory, geometry, and representation theory. For some purposes it is natural to consider a more general notion of "pseudo-reductive" group, first studied by Borel & Tits. We will explain...

The Euclidean division is a basic tool when dealing with the ordinary integers. It does not extend to rings of integers of algebraic number fields in general. It is natural to ask how to measure the "deviation" from the Euclidean property, and this...

It was a result of Greenlees and Sadofsky that classifying spaces of finite groups satisfy a Morava K-theory version of Poincare duality, which was proved by showing the contractibility of the corresponding Tate spectrum. In this series of two talks...

Abstract: The term "factorizable methods" in the context of fluid flow was coined more that a decade ago. It is meant to describe discretization methods for the compressible fluid flow equations that fully reflect the mixed character of the system of...

Why do some individuals provide benefits to others at a cost to themselves? "The puzzle of altruism" has already generated thousands of studies, but the multiplicity of frameworks (game theory, kin selection, group selection) gives an overall...

A closed geodesic on a surface can also be viewed as a closed orbit of the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of the surface. In this talk I will discuss the main tool for studying the knot-properties of closed orbits of (three dimensional)...

Berkovich's rigid analytic spaces are path-connected, Hausdorff, locally compact spaces that generalize non-archimedean fields in a way that allows conducting analysis. We use them to prove non-archimedean analogs of results in complex dynamics. It...

The presence of immune cells in breast tumors has been correlated with poor prognosis for years but it was not until recently that the role they play in promoting secondary tumors was understood. It has now been demonstrated experimentally that...

I will talk about my research at the Laboratoire d'Ecologie Alpine in 2011, where I studied the coevolution of the globeflower Trollius europaeus and its specialized nursery pollinators Chiastocheta flies. These small flies feed, mate, and lay eggs...

Directions

The PIMS offices are located on the 4th floor of the Earth Sciences Building (2207 Main Mall). If using the elevator, our offices will be directly across when you get to the 4th floor. If using the main staircase, the offices will be to your right once you reach the 4th floor.

Airport to PIMS UBC by Bus

From Vancouver Airport (YVR), take the Canada Line Skytrain to Broadway City Hall Station. Get off the platform and walk up to street level. Cross the street and you should see the #99Bline UBC stop outside the Lululemon store. You can take this bus all the way out to UBC. Detailed route information is available through translink's route planner or via google maps. See translink's fare page for up to date prices.

Airport to PIMS UBC by car

To drive from Vancouver Airport (YVR) to UBC, follow signs for Vancouver City Center when leaving the airport. After crossing the Arthur Laing bridge, follow 70th avenue/Marine Drive all the way out to UBC's Point Grey campus. The PIMS offices are in the Earth Science Building on Main Mall which doesn't permit vehicular traffic. The nearest parking lot (or drop off point for Taxis) is on West Mall near the West Parkade at the intersection of West Mall and Bio. Sciences Road (see this map).

Downtown Vancouver to PIMS UBC by car

When leaving Downtown Vancouver, follow signs for UBC (see this map).

Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to PIMS UBC by car

Follow directions for Vancouver airport until you reach the City of Vancouver, then follow the directions above for travelling from the airport.

US Border to PIMS UBC by car

Follow directions for Vancouver until you reach the City of Vancouver, then follow the directions above for travelling to PIMS from the airport. Please make sure you have the correct travel documents and follow instructions

Travelling between UBC and SFU by bus

There are many public transit options for travel between UBC and SFU but please note the universities are at opposite ends of Vancouver (SFU is actually in Burnaby) and travel can take an hour or more. Visit Translink for more travel options.
